NICL AO 2026 Age Limit and Age Relaxation

The age limit is minimum 21 years and maximum 30 years as on 01.10.2026. In simple words, you must be born between 02.10.1996 and 01.10.2005 (both dates inclusive).

If a candidate qualifies for relaxation under more than one category, the relaxation is cumulative, but the maximum age cannot exceed 45 years. Candidates must submit relaxation certificates and show originals at the interview stage. Also note that there is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen in the Officer cadre; they get only the age relaxation.

Important Notes on Qualification

  • The qualification must be from a university recognized by UGC or an institute approved by AICTE.
  • Percentage is calculated on the aggregate of all semesters/years. Fractions are ignored, so 59.99% is treated as less than 60%.
  • If your university awards CGPA/OGPA, you must produce a certificate from the authority stating the conversion norms and your percentage.
  • The date on the mark sheet or provisional certificate is taken as the date of passing. If the result was only posted on the university website, a certificate stating the date of result declaration is needed.
  • No work experience is mentioned as a requirement in the notification.

Nationality Requirement

A candidate must be a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 to settle permanently, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia) or Vietnam with the intention of settling permanently in India. Candidates in the last four categories must hold a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

NICL AO 2026 Application Fee

The fee is payable online from 08-10-2026 to 28-10-2026. It is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any future recruitment. Bank transaction charges, if any, must be borne by the candidate.

NICL AO 2026 Selection Process

The NICL AO selection process has three stages:

  1. Phase I – Preliminary Examination (Online): Objective test for all disciplines.
  2. Phase II – Main Examination (Online): Objective test plus a Descriptive test (typed on the computer).
  3. Interview: For candidates shortlisted on the basis of Mains performance.

Roughly 15 times the number of vacancies (subject to availability) will be shortlisted from Phase I for the Main exam. The Descriptive test is qualifying in nature and its marks are not counted for the interview shortlist or final selection. Candidates are shortlisted for the interview based on total marks in the Main objective test.

Final Selection and Merit List

  • Final score = Main Examination (Objective) and Interview in the ratio 80:20.
  • Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks in the interview.
  • Tie-breaker: first the marks in the interview; if still equal, the candidate older in age is placed higher.
  • A waiting list of up to 50% of the vacancies may be prepared and used if selected candidates do not accept the offer.
  • Appointment is subject to being found medically fit.

Descriptive Test

After the objective test, a 30-minute descriptive test of 30 marks (Essay – 10, Précis – 10, Comprehension – 10) is conducted in English. Answers must be typed on the computer. It is evaluated only for candidates who clear the sectional cut-offs of the objective test, and it is qualifying in nature.

🛈 Negative Marking: For every wrong answer in the objective tests (Prelims and Mains), one-fourth (0.25) of the marks allotted to that question is deducted. There is no penalty for unattempted questions.

Service Conditions, Probation and Bond

  • Posting: Selected candidates can be posted or transferred anywhere in India. Minimum stay at the initial place of posting is 5 years. Company Secretaries are primarily posted at Head Office, Kolkata.
  • Specialists: May be required to continue in the same specialization for a minimum of 10 years at the company’s discretion, while remaining eligible for promotions.
  • Probation: One year from the date of joining, which may be extended. Officers must pass the non-life Licentiate Examination of the Insurance Institute of India to be confirmed.
  • Guarantee Bond: Selected candidates must give an undertaking to serve for a minimum of four years including probation. For early exit, liquidated damages equal to one year’s gross salary (proportionately reduced depending on service rendered) apply, along with a stamped bond executed by two sureties (not blood relatives).
  • Exit during probation: Candidates resigning or terminated during probation must repay the gross salary received in addition to Rs. 25,000/- towards partial training cost.

Only online applications are accepted. Follow these steps:

Documents Required at the Interview Stage

You do not need to send any certificates with the online application. Shortlisted candidates must produce originals and self-attested photocopies at the interview, as applicable:

⏳ Information Awaited: The notification mentions a “Regional Language Test” in one place (in the Ex-Servicemen documents and registered-contact clauses), but the selection procedure does not list such a test. Exam Day Rules, ID Proof and Prohibited Items

  • Carry the valid call letter, original photo ID and a photocopy of the same ID. The name on the ID must exactly match the name on the call letter.
  • Accepted IDs include PAN Card, Passport, Permanent Driving Licence, Voter ID, Bank Passbook with photograph, Aadhaar / e-Aadhaar, Employee ID and others listed in the notification. Ration Card and Learner’s Driving Licence are not valid.
  • Women who changed their name after marriage should carry the Gazette notification, marriage certificate or affidavit in original.
  • Late arrivals after the reporting time on the call letter are not permitted.

  • Prohibited items include mobile phones, smart watches, calculators, Bluetooth devices, earphones, belts, caps, jewellery, metallic items, written material and opened eatables.

PwBD Candidates – Scribe and Compensatory Time

Eligible PwBD candidates (not less than 40% disability) who use a scribe get 20 minutes extra for every hour of the exam. The scribe must be arranged by the candidate at their own cost and must not be a candidate for this exam or an NICL employee. For Specialist posts, the scribe should be from a different academic stream. Visually impaired candidates can view the test in magnified font. The need for a scribe or compensatory time must be indicated in the online application form itself, as later requests may not be entertained. Candidates with temporary disabilities “likely to improve” are not eligible for reservation, as per the DEPwD clarification of 17 December 2025.

Pre-Examination Training for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD

SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy layer)/PwBD candidates who want online pre-examination training can indicate this while applying.
